Sofia Bulgaria

Sofia is a rapidly developing city experiencing the first benefits of capitalism after having been under economic repression for many years. These conditions create an atmosphere of disparity conducive to crime and scamming. A series of bombings and shootouts have occurred in public places in Sofia. It is believed these shootings were the result of turf wars among organized crime groups. These groups often travel in convoys of late-model SUVs and luxury sedans, accompanied by armed men, and frequent expensive restaurants, hotels, and nightclubs. Travelers should use caution when near such groups. People have complained of being victims of numerous scams. These often involve people who take advantage of tourists by appearing to help them out while exploiting the traveler's disadvantage of being in a foreign country and being unfamiliar with the language. Be wary of strangers who approach you unprovoked, especially in public areas like markets and transportation facilities. Always make sure you agree on a price before giving anyone money. Write it down if you have to. For more information on safe travel while in Sofia and Bulgaria, see the US State Department's Bulgaria Travel web www.bulgariatravelagent.com/sofia/
